Do I Need to Wait until Ash Wedneaday?

Everything you need to know about getting ready for Lent this year!

Updated this week

A Brief History of Lenten Preparation:

Since the Early Church, the Faithful have begun preparing for Lent in the weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday.

c. 384 AD: Lent is a Forty-Day Season

c. 530 AD: Lenten Preparation begins the Sunday Before Lent.

c. 546 AD: Lenten Preparation begins the Sunday Before that.

c. 643 AD: Lenten Preparation begins the Sunday Before that.

2024 AD: Lenten Preparation begins TODAY!

Every important moment of our lives requires preparation. Lent, the most important time of the year for renewal in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, is no exception. The Church, both East and West, has long offered a "Pre-Lent" period of preparation, ramping up spiritual practices to hit Lent in full stride.

Following the tradition of reading the early covenants of the Book of Genesis, Exodus’s Pre-Lent exercise examines how God invites us to follow him in faith. Beginning with the creation of Adam and Eve, we see how God made us good, entrusted a mission to us, and offered healing after the Fall. When humanity became corrupt in sin, God invited Noah to lead humanity in a renewal, cleansing the earth with water and offering the saving refuge of the ark. To further this renewal, God called Abraham out of Ur to become our father in faith, leaving his homeland behind and trusting the Lord even when the fulfillment of his promises seemed impossible. Likewise, God is calling us to follow him more fully, trusting in his promises to heal and renew us from within. With some preparation, this Lent can be different, becoming a time of true conversion and deepening in faith.

Our Plan of Life as We Prepare for Lent:

  • Read Daily Reading & Reflection

  • 20 Minutes of Silent Prayer

  • Prepare for Lent

  • Pray for Renewal

  • No Meat Wednesday and Friday

  • Cold Shower Fridays

  • Invite Men to join the Lent Challenge

  • Celebrate the Lord’s Day

Preparation Checklist

1. Begin with Prayer.

+ Lord, thank you for guiding me to Exodus this year. Continue to lead me as I discern who I will invite to join me in this exercise. Help me to accept the uncommon freedom that you have prepared for me as I become the renewal your Church so desperately needs. Amen.

2. Get the App.

Be prepared for the full Exodus experience with the Exodus 90 mobile app. Head over to create your account and learn more.

3. Start or join a local community.

An Exodus community is a large group at big parishes, cities, or counties where men will be able to connect. For further reading: “What is the Community Tab and How Should I Use It?”

4. Start or join a fraternity.

A fraternity is a small group of men that you will meet with every week. We have found that local fraternities tend to last longer and have more of an impact, so we recommend you start there. If you cannot join or start a local fraternity, use the Fraternity Finder in our app. For further reading: “Can You Connect Me to Other Men”?

5. Read these articles.

6. Consider your “Why.”

Follow the instructions to craft your why from “What’s Your Why”. Then enter your why into the app on the encrypted “My Why” page for future reference in the exercise.

7. Host/Attend a Preparatory Meeting.

Use the Weekly Meeting Guide to help prepare you and your fraternity for a fruitful experience together!
